Breaking Down the Salary History Inquiry Ban

Breaking Down the Salary History Inquiry BanBreaking Down the Salary History Inquiry BanRecent laws passed in major cities in the United States now make it illegal for those involved in hiring to inquire about a job candidates salary history. We break down exactly what this means for you and where the laws apply. What is a Salary History Inquiry Ban?Simply put, new laws in place are making it illegal for employers to inquire about a job candidates salary history. However, these laws may bedrngnis apply to you depending on where you live or the type of company you work for. This starts to get a little complicated because the salary history ban laws may exist in your area, but you just work for a company that it does not apply to. No worries. We will explain. The full extent of the law is still being worked on and in the early stages of any law, you will always have people testing if they can get away with breaking it.Important note Discussing your potential salary after you are hired is permitted. Job candidates can also freely share their salary history if they desire. BUT...they cannot be asked to share it.Why do companies request salary history? They do it to weed out job candidates based on previous salary history or as a negotiation tactic when a salary offer is going to be made. What problems does this create? Those with excellent skills and qualifications may not get paid the same amount of salary as someone else with the same skillset. In the past, they were either paid unfairly, negotiated poorly, or worked in a job market or industry that typically pays less. Why the Salary History Ban now?At the heart of this matter, the laws are trying to ensure salary equality for all employees. In the United States, there is still a salary gemeinsame agrarpolitik between genders. Women in the United States still earn less than men, according to the National Womens Law Center. Women make only 80 cents for every dollar a man makes in the US.This law aims to stop the trend of inequality which was nurtured by asking for salary history and paying a person based on previous unequal salaries.Where does the law apply and for who? This is the part you want to pay most attention to. See below for links from local resourcesNew York City (local law)Law in effect 10/31/2017Companies impacted Public and privateSan Francisco (local law)Law in effect 7/1/2018Companies impacted Public and privateCalifornia (state law)Law in effect 1/1/2018Companies impacted Public and privatePittsburgh (local law)Law already in effectCompanies impacted City employeesPhiladelphia (local law)Law was to go in effect on 5/23/2017. You will still see for a while that job applications online will ask you for salary history in one of the forms and require you to do so. And if you dont, you cant submit the application until you fill out the entire form. That is a real pain that will not be fixed until teams who made the forms have to go in and change them. Until then, it may be better to either not submit, skip the application, or put in a false number and explain later. You will also have to research where you live and where the company is based because you may be in an impacted city or state, but the company you are applying to is not. If that is the case, you are both bound by your own laws, meaning they can ask and you can say n o.Oh yes. This is going to be a work in progress. The rest of the United States has some catching up to do.If you have any problemsSee if your local labor commission has a hotline for those who have experienced salary history discrimination. For example, New York City has a 311 hotline or (718) 722-3131 where you can ask for the Human Rights Division. Also, check to see what labor resources may be available in your community.

Best Tips to Get Ready to Start a New Job

Best Tips to Get Ready to Start a New JobBest Tips to Get Ready to Start a New JobCongratulations You have a new job. Now its time to prepare to get off to a great abflug with your new employer. When you receive and accept a job offer, there are a lot of practical things you should do before your first day to allow for a smooth transition. How to Get Ready to Start a New Job Here is a list of things to consider doing before starting your new job. You might not have time to do all of behauptung things before you begin work, particularly if you are asked to begin right away. However, you can go through this list and select the essential tasks to complete first and then accomplish the others during the first couple of weeks of work. Make Necessary Household Arrangements You may need to arrange for childcare, depending on the age of your children and the hours that you work. If you decide to hire a sitter, try to find a sitter before you start your job. Ideally, have that sitter meet with you and your kids at least once or twice before you start work to make aya he or she is a good fit. If you need to find a daycare or afterschool program, you should also try to find a place that is a good fit before beginning your job. This way, you dont have to scramble to find new childcare once youve begun your job. Of course, you may not have a lot of time before you start your job, in which case you might have to continue to find the right form of childcare while youre working. If there are any other things you need to be taken care of at home while youre at the office- if you have a pet that needs to be walked and fed, or plants that need to be watered- be sure to hire someone to do these tasks before you begin work. Plan Your Commute Make sure you know exactly how to get to your new office, and how long it will take. If you are taking public transportation, make sure you know any and all stops and transfers you will need to take. Practice going to work one or tw o times before work starts so you will know how long the commute is (be sure to leave around the time you plan to leave for work, so you can account for any traffic). You might want to come up with a backup route too, just in case, traffic is particularly bad one day. On your first day, leave 10 minutes earlier than you think you need to- just in case. Plan Your Outfit Choose your outfit for the first day of work a few days in advance. This will give you time to wash, iron, dry clean, or hem any clothing items. If you are unsure of how you should dress on the first day, you can call your companys human resources representative for advice. Remember, it is best to dress on the conservative side for the first couple of weeks of work. Once you get a feel for the office culture, you can begin to dress somewhat more casually, if that is what your officemates do. Make Any Appointments If you can help it, you dont want to be asking for time off from work to go to doctors appointment s in the first couple weeks of work. Therefore, you should try to schedule any upcoming doctors appointments for before your new job begins. If you already have an appointment scheduled that falls within the first couple weeks of work, you might want to call and see if they can fit you in earlier. If your insurance provider is going to change with your new job, now would also be the time to make sure your current doctors will take your new insurance. Otherwise, you will have to either start looking for new doctors, or see if you have out-of-network coverage on your new insurance. Also, think of any other appointments you want to make to ensure you look and feel your best on your first day. Consider making an appointment with a hairdresser if you havent had a haircut in a while. You might even consider getting a manicure or pedicure (no bright colors or crazy patterns) if you like painting your nails- anything that will make you feel confident on day one Get Plenty of Sleep If yo uve had a slightly irregular sleep schedule during your job-searching period, now is the time to get back into a regular sleep pattern. Start going to bed and waking up at the times you plan to do so for work. Ideally, you should begin getting into this pattern two weeks before you begin your job. However, if you dont have that much time, just start as soon as you can. Youll feel much more rested on that first day of work, and youll be less worried about sleeping through your alarm Get Your Materials Together Make sure you have all the materials you will need for day one. Get a notepad and pen to bring the first week, so you can take notes on all the introductory information you will likely receive (or, if you prefer taking notes on your smartphone, you can do so instead). Bring all the information you need to complete new hire paperworkif you havent done it prior to starting the job. If you are unsure about whether people tend to buy or bring their lunch, pack a lunch for day o ne, just in case. If there is anything else that your boss or human resources representative told you to bring to work, be sure you have it. Also, make sure you have a professional-looking bag or briefcase for all your things. Working from Home If youare working from home, make sure you have all the tools you will need in your office. These tools might include a computer, printer, scanner, telephone, pens, and paper, etc. Clean and arrange your office space before your first day so you can start work with an organized workspace. Research the Company With all the little practical tasks you have to do before your first day, its easy to forget about what you can do to prepare for the job itself. Before the first day, spend a little time refreshing yourself on the organization and its mission. This task can be as simple as skimming over the companys website one more time. If you have a friend who knows someone at the company, you might also consider asking your friend to set up a coffee date for you and your future coworker. This way, you can get to know at least one friendly face at work before your first day. Make the Best Impression Its important to make the best impression starting with your first day on the job. Review these tips and strategies for successfully starting a new job before you start the next step of your career.

How to Tell If a Company is Family-Friendly

How to Tell If a Company is Family-FriendlyHow to Tell If a Company is Family-FriendlyWhat do parents want from work? Theres no one answer to that question. Some parents prioritize flexible schedules, while others are more intent on weekends completely free from any work, including email. But one thing nearly every parent desires is a family-friendly workplace. How to Tell If a Job Posting Is Family-Friendly How can you discover if a workplace will provide the work-life balance you need for yourself and your family before you take a job? It isnt always easy to know a companys attitude toward parents, but much is revealed in job advertisements. Checking out the company before you apply can save you some time putting in applications. You can ignore the employers who dont appear to be a good fit and focus on applying for jobs that meet your guidelines. Before you craft a cover letter and tap into your network for connections, review the job posting carefully for signs that the ort i s at a family-friendly company. Signs That a Company Supports Families 1. Pay Attention to How They Describe Themselves Heres one easy signal Some companies will describe themselves as family-friendly within the job posting (most likely, in the section describing the company). The company may also highlight awards and acknowledgements, such as making it onto a list of family-friendly companies. 2. Read for Code Words Even if the company doesnt directly define themselves as family-friendly, some code words in the job description can be very revealing, such as work-life balance and flexibility. Look for a sense that the work completed is more important than time in bro references to work-from-home or telecommuting options can signal the companys flexibility toward parents schedules. 3. Look at the List of Benefits Does the job ad mention childcare, insurance, or other family-friendly musts? A company that pays for parental leave is more likely to provide support to working parents in non-financial ways as well. Look also for companies that call out IVF coverage, help with adoption, or other family-oriented perks. 4. Review the Responsibilities and Qualifications Not all moms and dads have the same definition of a family-friendly job. Consider whats important for you maybe long hours are just fine, so long as weekends are work-free. Perhaps your top priority is avoiding out-of-state travel, and being home in time for your childs bedtime. 5. Match Your Schedule to the Job Think about your ideal schedule, and then review the list of responsibilities and the description of what the job entails with an eye toward clues about hours, travel, and other responsibilities that might cut into your time with family. How to Confirm the Company is Family-Friendly After youve reviewed the job posting to see if theres a fit, make a list of the pros and cons to see how the job matches up to what youre looking for. If its a good fit, or even close, take the time to apply. You can always investigate further as the hiring process moves forward. 1. Look for Clues During Your Interviews Always remember, the goal of an interview is for employees to find out about your abilities, and for you to find out more about the position and company culture. At the end of an interview, you should have a better sense of whether the job is the right fit for you. If youre seeking a position at a family-friendly company, ask questions that will help you know the companys culture and attitude toward parents you can inquire about a typical workday, ask if the position comes with frequent last-minute requests or fire drills, or if people tend to find a good work-life balance. As well, you can ask if employees ever work from home, or if the company has any kind of flexible work schedule. As you enter and exit the companys office, look around Do you see a lactation room for breastfeeding moms? Does the company have a daycare facility? These are strong signs that the company i s making an effort to accommodate parents. Keep your eyes open for more subtle signs as well, such as kids drawings tacked to cubicle walls and family photos. When a company has many parents, they are potentially more likely to accommodate parenting schedule challenges and have family-friendly work events. 2. Ask the Right Questions After You Get a Job Offer Once the company expresses interest in hiring you, its a good opportunity to get answers to any remaining questions you have about the companys culture, benefits, and expectations for employees. If you dont already know the companys benefits, you can ask Is the health-insurance family-friendly? Does the company offer day care on site, or have any coverage for childcare? Whats the flex-time policy, and do employees ever work from home? 3. Network Your Way to More Information If you havent already, reach out to your network do any of your connections, either in real life or through LinkedIn, work at the company or know someone who does? They may have insight into whether the company will be a good fit for you. An in-person meet-up, phone call, or an email exchange can provide much insight into the real day-to-day of a company. Research now to help prevent unpleasant surprises during your first weeks at a new company.

10 Ways to Be a Better Manager

10 Ways to Be a Better Manager10 Ways to Be a Better ManagerManaging is a skill that can be learned. Every day, pick just one of these 10 ways to improve your skills.Work on it. Then pick another one. Youll be a better manager before you know it, and others will notice, too. Select the Best People As a manager, you are only as good as the people on your team. Give yourself a better chance to succeed by picking the best people from the start. Be a Motivator Human beings do things because they want to. Sometimes they only want to because the consequences of not doing it are sure to be unpleasant. However, fruchtwein of the time they do things because of what they get out of it. Its no different at work. People do good work for pay, prestige, or recognition. They do bad work because they want to take it easy and still get paid. They work hard because they want to impress someone. To motivate your people, figure out what motivates them, and give them that if you can. Build You r Team It is not enough that each person is motivated to succeed. They need to work together as a team to accomplish the groups objective. If they could get it done individually, they wouldnt need you to manage them. Improve your team building skills. Be a Leader You have built the best team from the best employee available. You motivated them to peak performance. What is missing? Motivating a team is useless unless you provide direction. You need to turn that motivation towards a goal and lead the team to it. It is the ability to lead others that truly sets a manager apart. Leaders are found at all levels of the organization. You want to be one of them. Be a Communicator Communication may be the single most important skill of a manager. You cant be a leader if you cant communicate your vision. You cant motivate people if they cant understand what you want. Communication skills can be improved through practice. Work on getting your point across. Keep an Eye on the Money Most managers are expected to help the company make money, directly or indirectly. That means bringing money in the door and spending less than you bring in. Depending on your function in the organization, you may have more influence on one area or the other, but you need to understand both. You can help your company, your employees, and yourself by getting better at managing the companys money. Dont be put off by the fact that its math. If you dont know the basics of money management, start learning. Keep an Eye on the Time The one thing you will probably have less of at work than money is time. The better you get at managing time, your own and that of others, the more effective you will be as a manager. Here are two key skills. You dont need a degree in project management, but you might benefit from a course in project management 101. Improve Yourself Dont focus so hard on your people that you forget about yourself. Identify the areas in which you are weak and improve the m. The fact that you are reading this article shows you understand the concept. You need to put it into practice. Practice Ethical Management Scandals like the collapse of Enron have driven home the point about how important ethics is in business. Whatever you do or dont do, be honest. Be decent. To your team members, to your customers, to your co-workers, and to your bosses. Take a Break You are less effective as a manager if you are over-stressed. You are less tolerant. You snap at people. No one wants to be anywhere near you. Take a break. Give yourself a chance to relax and recharge your batteries. Your increased productivity when you return will more than make up for the time you take off. So have a good laugh or go lie on a beach somewhere.

Four Creative Myths that Can Destroy Companies

Four Creative Myths that Can Destroy CompaniesFour Creative Myths that Can Destroy CompaniesFour Creative Myths that Can Destroy Companies Burkus, author of The Myths of Creativity (Jossey-Bass, 2013)What causes us to be creative in one moment and void in the next? What makes someone more or less creative than his or her peers? Where do our flashes of creative insight come from, and how can we generate more of them?In my book, The Myths of Creativity, I look at the latest research into how creative individuals and firms succeed and the creative myths that can stunt creative thinking, including the four myths that are outlined here. The Lone Creator MythWhat It IsThe belief that creativity is a solo performance and that the story of innovations can be told as the story of a single partie working fervently on the new idea.In the popular media, this myth sells. Magazines, newspapers and books are filled with stories of lone creative geniuses. These stories tend to ignore a truth behind a ll great innovations and creative works those geniuses typically had teams. How to Bust It The fruchtwein innovative companies in the world understand the need for diversity and make sure that project teams have a rotating cast of new and old members. The teams connect, collaborate, disband and repeat. When individuals are given a chance to form teams around their diverse interests and their past experiences, the potential for creativity is unleashed.Companies that Mastered the Myth Continuums most significant innovation isnt a new shoe or a different kind of floor mop. Instead, its the process the company has uncovered for creating the right project teams and continuously tweaking them to blend fresh insights and shared experiences. The Expert MythWhat It IsThe belief that long-standing experts are the best source of new, innovative solutions and that the best people for solving hard problems are always experts. This myth explains lucrative consulting contracts and the exorbitant sala ries of experts, despite their most productive years being long behind them. Research supports the idea that innovative new ideas most often come from people at the fringes. How to Bust It The most creative organizations seek to fill their rosters with a few folks from the fringes. Many do this through the hiring process, but others reach out to their customers and stakeholders for insights. The most creative people strive to become T-shaped, with a depth of knowledge in one field (like the vertical part of the letter T) and also a wide understanding of various fields (the horizontal part of the T). Their insights come when something on the fringes applies to their field, or something from their field can be moved to the fringes.Companies that Mastered the Myth Fuse Corps, a San Francisco-based nonprofit, actively partners with city and state governments to place entrepreneurs and mid-career professionals into fellowships as advisors to mayors and governors. The Fuse Corps fellows gi ve a much needed innovation injection to governments in need. The Cohesive MythWhat It Is The belief that the creative process requires total cohesion, with everyone on a project getting along, having fun, and always reaching consensus. This belief grew out of an old rule of brainstorming suspend judgment. However, research implies that even when brainstorming, a little bit of productive conflict goes a long way toward more and better ideas. How to Bust It The most innovative companies cultivate productive, task-focused criticism when it comes to projects. Their people are trained to focus on providing constructive comments, but not pulling punches, and to respond positively when on the receiving end of criticism. The criticism stays focused on projects and process, but never on people.Companies that Mastered the Myth Animation powerhouse Pixar developed a process they call positivsing. During film production, animators and directors invite folks from around the company to view the fi lm in progress and offer criticisms.Employees can shred the film apart but must always end their critique with a plus a suggestion for improving the precise element they criticized. Those on the receiving end reserve the right to accept or reject the criticism. Regardless, directors still leave the room with ample ideas for improvement. The Mousetrap MythWhat It Is The belief that were good at spotting creative ideas and that great ideas and innovations are accepted the minute theyre presented to the outside world. We foolishly think if you build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door. The truth is that great ideas get rejected all the time. If you build a better mousetrap, the world will probably beat it down or ignore it.How to Bust It At the core of this myth is a hidden bias against creative ideas. We say we want innovative thinking but, for an idea to be creative, it has to be both new and useful. It turns out that we use the status quo (i.e. the old) for j udging whether new ideas are useful. Thus we often cant see the practicality of an untried idea because the frame of reference is based solely on tried ideas.Companies that Mastered the Myth Rhode Island-based Rite-Solutions set up an internal stock exchange for new ideas. Anyone in the company can post new ideas and all employees are given virtual currency to invest in these stocks. If an idea gets enough virtual investment, it becomes a real project. While this doesnt eliminate the bias entirely, spreading the weight of decision- making out from one particular manager to multiple people increases the chances that people who arent as afflicted with a bias against a particular idea have the opportunity to share their input.Author BioDavid Burkus is author of The Myths of Creativity ( Jossey-Bass, 2013). Preventing Concussions on the Ice

Preventing Concussions on the Ice Preventing Concussions on the Ice As a new hockey season dawns amid mounting concerns about the increase in player concussions, researchers at Virginia Tech have begun a program to test and evaluate various models of helmets for safety and durability. The laboratory-based program will include specific ratings that players, coaches, and trainers can apply to assess the capability of certain brands to reduce the risk of concussions resulting from collisions and other head impacts. Following up on the success of Virginia Techs rating program for football helmets carried out in 2011-2012, the universitys Biomedical Engineering Department will be putting popular brands of hockey helmets through a series of rigorous impact tests in an effort to quantify the protective performance of the headgear against concussions. The data collected will serve as the foundation for a numerical ratings system that assigns grades from high to low based on the predictive capability of the helmet to protect against injury. Part of the strategy to reduce the incidences of concussions at all levels of competitive hockey involves improvements in head protection, said Steven Rowson, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Virginia Tech and co-investigator on the STAR program. The aim of our research is to identify helmets that demonstrate the strongest potential to minimize the risk of on-ice concussions. Steven Rowson (left) and Stefan Duma (right) rate hockey helmets abilities to reduce the risk of concussions caused by head impacts. Image: VT.edu An Epidemic A sports concussion occurs when the head is accelerated during an impact, resulting in relative motion between the brain and skull and causing intracranial pressure gradients and strain responses within the brain tissue. While concussions in football garner the most public attention, in the last 10-15 years, there has been an alarming increase in the number of concussions suffered by professional, collegiate, and youth hockey players. Eighty National Hockey League players sustained concussions in the 2010-2011 season, compared to 60 in 1997-1998. Concussions have claimed players ranging from former superstar Eric Lindros, who skated for the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1980s and 1990s, to lesser-known NHL professionals who have played bit roles on teams. Six concussion-related lawsuits have been filed in U.S. courts by former NHL players, with many more expected in the near future. Concussions in youth hockey are difficult to gauge, chiefly because reliable medical assessments generally are not performed at youth hockey games and also because peewee and high school players often neglect to report dizziness and other concussion symptoms to coaches and parents. But experts contend that many concussions do occur in youth hockey. A recent article in The Journal of Sports Engineering and Technology mentioned that a sample of 13 year-old male and female hockey players received head impacts equal in magnitude to measured values in collegiate American football players. The helmet rating system is based on more than a decade of data collection by the Virginia Tech research center. Image: VT.edu Testing Methodology Rowson believes his research will improve safety. He and his colleagues have developed laboratory testing helmets that are representative of real-world head impacts. Virginia Tech will draw on research compiled at Brown University and Dartmouth College, which have instrumented ice hockey helmets to collect head impact data directly from players. In addition, Rowson and his team rented a hockey rink in Roanoke, VA, to identify differences in head impact characteristics between collisions with the sideboards, glass, and ice. Together, these studies inform our testing methods, enabling us to reconstruct real-world head impacts, explains Rowson, a member of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers who has published articles on biomedical engineering in ASME journals. In the tests, a custom-designed impact pendulum that emulates on-ice impacts strikes a head-form instrumented with accelerometers and angular rate sensors. Each helmet is put through a variety of impacts, which are distinct according to impact location (front, rear, side, and top) and impact velocity. Linear as well as rotational head acceleration are measured via high-tech sensors, and the data is collected and analyzed. Hockey helmets modulate energy transfer to the head during impact in a variety of configurations, notes Rowson. Our testing methodology enables us to map head impact exposure to specific energy levels and impact locations on the helmet. The researchers apply complex mathematical equations and computations in the analysis. According to Rowson, the tests will allow Virginia Tech to calculate an incidence of concussion by knowing how frequently each impact configuration is experienced by players, and the probability of injury associated with the head acceleration generated from the impact. The values will then be summated to produce an overall prediction of the number of concussions a player will experience over a full hockey season while wearing a given helmet. A Debate While some in sports medicine dismiss the role of improved helmet designs in reducing the incidence of concussions in hockey and other competitive sports, Rowson firmly believes that new headgear can be a blueprint for less brain damage. Football helmet manufacturers, which post Virginia Techs ratings on their products, seem to be buying in to Rowsons assessment. Riddell has introduced a football helmet featuring an exterior panel that can move slightly inward to absorb hits to the crown of the head, essentially dispersing the energy from the blow. It is a challenge for manufacturers to optimize helmet designs, because you must account for so many different impact scenarios, said Rowson. While we are not specifically telling manufacturers how to revise their designs, we do believe that the quest to produce a helmet that lowers head acceleration and as a result, reduces the risk of concussion should not be abandoned. We want to provide sporting goods manufacturers with a set of performance criteria for helmets that can be used to reduce the probability of concussion. For Further Discussion It is a challenge for manufacturers to optimize helmet designs, because you must account for so many different impact scenarios. Prof. Steven Rowson, Virginia Tech University

Best Smartphone for Sales ProfessionalsPart Two

Best Smartphone for Sales Professionalsâ€"Part Two Best Smartphone for Sales Professionals- Part Two In part one of this series, Blackberry was off to a lead over Android-based phones and the iconic Apple iPhone. So far, weve discussed email, text messaging, apps, calendars, and social networking. In part 2 of this article, we will discuss a few items that wont make most peoples list when comparing smartphones. Things like professionalism, focus, productivity, and intangibles. Who Are Your Customers? In general, people buy from people they like and, in general, people buy from people who are similar to them. This means that if two people have several things in common, they have an increased chance of liking one another compared to two people who dont have many things in common. Salespeople often try to build rapport with their customer through identifying areas of prospect/customer interest that they have experience with. Sometimes, finding a rapport-building conversation is challenging and sales people feel forced to come up with something. Before asking about the weather, sales professionals in the tech field often look for electronic devices to spark a conversation. The smartphone attached to a customers belt or sitting on the desk is an often used conversation starter. While this may seem like a stretch, realize that many people are passionate about their devices, including their smartphones. Numerous conversations have been centered around a specific app, smartphone game or how the newest operating system or phone model compares with others. Apple has the most passionate and loyal customers, giving the iPhone the point for an increased ability to start a rapport-building conversation around. Blackberry3, iPhone2, Android2 Blending Your Personal Life Having a healthy work-life balance is critical for most to maintain long-term success. If all that is thought of work, your personal life will, inevitably, suffer. With Internet access, apps designed to do anything and everything from kill a few pigs by launching kamikaze birds to making dinner reservations for your significant others birthday, all three smartphones can deliver. However, Blackberrys presentation of their apps and their lack of app availability really turns many people away. Both the iPhone and Android have an astounding number of apps and the number of their apps continue to grow every day. While as of the writing of this article Apple has more apps, both the iPhone and Android earn a point in this category. Blackberry3, iPhone3, Android3 Focus on Business This articles focus is not on which phone is an all-around more equipped and capable smartphone, but which smartphone is best suited for sales professionals. Breaking the tie is which smartphone offers fewer distractions and Blackberry wins due to a recognized weakness. iPhones and Androids have an incredible number of non-business focused apps available for download. Once installed, a sales professional is but a few finger swipes away from playing Angry Birds, Cut the Rope and a thousand other games. The sales rep can easily check the score of the Yankees game, grab a recipe or check how their eBay auction is going. While a wide variety of apps is a strength, it is also a weakness for the iPhone and Android-based smartphones. Blackberry phones are more like business tools than are the other contenders. Their simplicity and lack of available distractions are powerful omissions that not only keep network administrators happy  but remove potential distractions in a sales professionals day. For those sales reps with the discipline and focus that keeps them from the temptation of playing a quick video game instead of making a cold call, the best smartphone for them is largely a matter of taste. All three are great phones. But for a sales professional who needs a tool that is designed to assist them in their day to day business activities and is not designed to provide easy access to distractions, Blackberry is the best choice. How to Handle Busy Phones Working From Home

How to Handle Busy Phones Working From Home How to Handle Busy Phones Working From Home Is your business phone ringing off the hook? If the calls are business-related and helping you to generate income, it may be a sign your business is growing faster than you can handle alone. But many small businesses now publish phone information on websites and blogs and end up being inundated with many calls that are just a waste of time. Running a successful business requires using the telephone to stay in touch with your customers, clients, and other important business contacts. If you find yourself on the phone all day and unable to get to other important tasks, here are some tips for helping you to better manage your telephone time. It’s Still a Job! If you were working outside the home, your employer would probably restrict or prohibit personal phone calls on company time. When you work from home, your works hours should be dedicated to work-related calls as much as possible. Being your own boss should not be seen as a license to set low work standards for yourself. You need to treat self-employment as a job with real responsibilities and set ground rules necessary for your success. Tips to help you better manage your time spent on phone calls include: Schedule Personal Calls, Not Business Calls: Use work hours for making and taking work-related calls. Make personal calls for appointments on your “lunch hour” or as early in the day as possible.Avoid Social Calls During Work Hours: Since you need to call most of your business contacts during “normal” business hours let your family and friends wait to hear from you until the weekend or after business hours. Youll be less stressed and more focused on who you are talking with than the next call you have to make. Get Organized: Never jot phone call notes on scraps of paper! Buy a phone message pad where you can record calls and keep your notes in one place. Notebook style pads with carbon copies are the best. They hold hundreds of messages in one place, and you can rip out pages and still have a carbon copy in the book.  Do Not Answer Every Single Call You Get: Voicemail is not one of the seven deadly sins. There is nothing wrong with letting calls go to voicemail if you are swamped. You can pick up messages after hours when things are less hectic. Take Advantage of High-Tech Call Management Features and Devices Use Caller ID â€" A Must for Small Business Owners: If you know who is calling you, it is easier to make decisions about whether or not you have time to take the call. It is a great way to screen personal calls, telemarketing calls, and even callers you just do not want to talk to.  Register Your Home, Business, and Cell Phones with the National Do Not Call Registry: Stop unwanted interruptions from telemarketers. Even if you have an unlisted number, unless you register with the Do Not Call list, phone solicitors can still legally call you.   Block Unwanted Phone Calls: Use Anonymous Call Rejection services and devices to keep callers with their own blocked information from calling you. Most blocked incoming calls are from people you may not wish to speak with â€" like telemarketers!Block Your Own Caller ID Information: Using a caller ID block feature on business phones is legal unless you are actually soliciting or telemarketing your business. Blocking your own caller ID information can help keep your contact information off telemarketing lists. It is especially important if you make frequent calls to get quotes, collect pricing information, or make over-the-phone purchases.

Commercial Sublease Agreement FAQ - United States

Commercial Sublease Agreement FAQ - United States Commercial Sublease Agreement FAQ - United States DefinitionsWhat does Automatic Renewal mean?Automatic renewal means that the lease continues indefinitely on the agreed upon interval (weekly, monthly, or yearly) until either the Subtenant or the Sublandlord gives notice to the other party that they will be terminating the sublease. What is a check-in inspection form? The check-in inspection form is completed by the Subtenant within a reasonable amount of time after the Subtenant takes possession of the property. This form will contain a description of the condition of the property at the time of the Subtenant's possession, and will be used at the end of the sublease term as a comparison tool to determine if the Subtenant caused any damage to the property. What is a damage deposit? The damage deposit is money that the Subtenant pays to the Sublandlord at the start of the sublease term, which the Sublandlord will use to cover the costs of any repairs caused by the Subtenant that need to be done to the property at the end of the sublease term, after the Subtenant has vacated the premises. If some of the damage deposit still remains after all repairs are completed, the remainder of the damage deposit will be returned to the Subtenant, or if there are no repairs that need to be done to the property, then all of the damage deposit will be returned to the Subtenant. What is the Master/Original Lease? This is the original lease that the Sublandlord (the tenant in the original lease) entered into with the Landlord and from which the Subtenant's interest will be created. It can also be known as a master lease which governs all the subleases under it. Who is the Sublandlord? The Sublandlord or Sublessor is the person that entered into a lease with the original Landlord, and who is now leasing all or part of the Landlord's property to the Subtenant. Who is the Subtenant? The Subtenant or Sublessee is the person who is entering into a lease for some or all of the Landlord's property from the Sublandlord (the original Tenant). Sublease InformationWhat is the governing law of my Sublease? The governing law will be the jurisdiction in which the property is located, regardless of which jurisdictions the Sublandlord and Subtenant reside. Do I need to provide the Subtenant with a copy of the Master Lease?Yes, the Subtenant is entitled to a copy of the Master Lease. The Sublandlord can include a copy of the Master Lease with the Sublease Agreement, or can deliver a copy directly to the Subtenant. Can I sublease a portion of the property rather than the entire property?Yes, you can sublease a part or all of the leased premises to the Subtenant. Should the Subtenant have insurance? It is strongly advised that the Property should be insured. However, the Subtenant does not need to have their own insurance if the Sublandlord has obtained sufficient insurance to cover the Subtenant. How many days should the Subtenant be given to complete a check-in inspection form? There is no statutory minimum amount of time, but the Sublandlord should give the Subtenant a reasonable amount of time. Depending on the circumstances under which the Subtenant will take possession, a reasonable period of time would likely be between 7 and 30 days. How much should the damage deposit be?Damage deposits are usually equivalent to the value of one month's rent, but can be any amount that the Sublandlord decides upon in a commercial setting. Can I restrict what alterations the Subtenant is allowed to make to the property?Yes, the Sublandlord can determine the extent to which the Subtenant can make alterations. The Sublandlord may reduce the Subtenant's right to make improvements from the level established for the Sublandlord in the Master Lease, but the Sublandlord cannot increase the Subtenant's right to make alterations beyond the level outlined in the Master Lease. What additional purposes can the Subtenant make of the property? The Sublandlord can only authorize the Subtenant to use the property for purposes that have been approved by the Landlord. Before allowing the Subtenant to use the property for additional purposes that are not stated in the Master Lease, the Sublandlord needs to obtain the consent of the Landlord. Do I need to create the Landlord's Consent to Sublease? The Landlord's Consent to Sublease should only be included in the Sublease Agreement if the Landlord has not previously provided written consent to the sublease. I do not know when the Sublease will be signed. Can I fill in the date later?Yes, by selecting 'Unsure' as the date the agreement will be signed, a blank line will be inserted into the lease so that you can add the correct date after printing the document. Who should sign the Sublease? Both the Sublandlord and the Subtenant should sign the Sublease, and it is strongly recommended that at least 2 witnesses also sign it.

Why One Company Prefers to Employ vs. Contract Field Professionals

Why One Company Prefers to Employ vs. Contract Field Professionals Why One Company Prefers to Employ vs. Contract Field Professionals In today’s day and age, it seems that contractors are Silicon Valley’s workaround for high fixed operating costs, but that shouldn’t be the only factor to consider in determining the tax status of a company’s key asset, it’s people. At ezhome today we have a field staff of 150 combined gardeners, irrigation specialists, handymen, and electricians. Within a few years, that number will grow into the thousands and tens of thousands by 2025. These people are professionals and we treat them as such: they’re ezhome employees with insurance , overtime pay, health benefits, 401k plans, career advancement opportunities, and paid time off. Building a low margin business with high fixed costs isn’t easy, but nobody said innovation was easy. We chose this more difficult path because we believe that the home services industry needs to be revolutionized and our use of technology and a fully-employed workforce will allow us to fundamentally change the space. There are hundreds of thousands of home service professionals in the U.S., many of whom are negatively affected by the seasonality of their profession, low-tech communication channels, and a lack of business tools to do their jobs as effectively as possible. We are providing long-term career opportunities to these hard working professionals. We guarantee a full-time schedule with full-time pay, benefits, and career advancement opportunities on a year-round basis. This frees up our team to fully focus on being amazing at their craft instead of worrying about when their next job will come in. We believe that by investing in our employees in this way, they will be invested in us and our customers and we can build a healthy, long-term, professional relationship. We are committed to giving our employees a solid onboarding and training experience so that they can hit the ground running. In addition, as with any career, we know that learning and development is crucial to job satisfaction and a long-term career, so we also provide opportunities for our employees to learn new skills. Again, by investing in our people, we know they will be more invested in us and our customers and, therefore, be committed to delivering an amazing customer experience. This investment in our workforce allows us to guarantee a high standard quality of service. Additionally, our use of technology to operationalize the delivery of services provides a never-before-possible level of consistency - from the professional who arrives at a customer’s home to deliver recurring services such as gardening or cleaning to the actual quality of the service, itself. The Highest Value Customer Experience Before ezhome, a common frustration we heard from customers is the amount of time they needed to spend to find professionals to care for their home. For services from painting to flooring to tree pruning there was the need to research and contact potential providers, meet them in person, receive quotes and ultimately negotiate and choose a provider. Meanwhile, all of this is before their home is even being serviced. With ezhome, this pre-service work is 100% eliminated. Via our web or mobile applications, customers simply select a service, receive their quote, and make their purchase. Dynamic

Dynamic It doesn’t take being an employment expert to realize that workplaces are evolving in the 21st century. Still, it may come as a surprise to discover that recruiters are looking for “superstars,” “ninjas” and “wizards” to “work hard, play hard” on a “tight-knit team,” in a job that for whatever reason involves “nerf guns.”A new project published on United Kingdom job aggregator AdView compiles the most popular words among the copious amounts of jargon job seekers have to sift through to try to understand listings (see the full list below). Some of the terms on the list are all too familiar: “Dynamic,” “proactive,” “self-starter” - words that mean nothing but encompass everything. But other terms are even vaguer: Employers are apparently hoping to find “rockstars” fond of “blue sky thinking” who “kick it into the long grass.” And somehow, “ping-pong” fits into the equation? This lingo may fuel confusion - and frankly prove emotiona lly upsetting to those of us who were told we couldn’t be wizards when we grew up because they “didn’t exist” (thanks, Mom). But there’s a reason why recruiters are changing how they talk about work, and it’s kind of our fault. So we’re ninjas now?In an economy where skill shortages are the norm, companies are desperate to recruit the best talent they can to keep their businesses running smoothly. Part of their tactic is to come up with catchy job titles that appeal to young people who want to do good for the world, according to a recent Wall Street Journal article. Incorporating “evangelist” or “wizard” into a job listing does more than just imbue a role with purpose; for companies that have been around for a while, it shows a potential applicant that executives are willing to adapt and modernize. As one might suspect, there are indeed downsides to these catchy titles, the Journal reports. They will likely be less searchable for older applicants, and people in t he workforce may have trouble defining what a “recruitment ninja” actually means on a one-page resume when they look for future opportunities.Whether positive or negative, the trend has taken off as companies across the country and in Europe try to rebrand their culture as “synergistic” and “incentivized.” New age jargon that clouds the specificities of a role continues to gain traction, with cities known for hipster, youthful vibes taking a special liking to the terms.According to the AdView project, Seattle, and San Francisco were the guiltiest cities for using jargon, and other cities across California as well as Austin, Texas, ranked high. Far lower on the list were metropolises such as New York, Detroit,  and Philadelphia. But even major political and financial hubs are jumping aboard the jargon cruise. Washington, D.C., and London were both among the top 10 guiltiest cities for using jargon, though neither capital is especially known for its hip workforce. So what do es all the jargon mean? Well, it gives employees more agency - now, they can be “shine artists” at shoeshine places or PR ninjas at their corporate office. But it also means that job listings are getting that much more homogenous, misleading, and imprecise for job seekers who just want to know if they’re qualified and whether to apply. Here’s the gist: For those of us who dreamed of going to Hogwarts, this is our moment. You’re a wizard, random applicant, just leave the wand at home. But for everyone else, let the jargon headache ensue - it’s going to be a wild ride. The 40 most used buzzwords in U.S. job listings1. Laser-focused %%title%% I had to overcome several obstacles while in the FBI Academy as I trained to become an FBI agent. I needed to learn how to stay calm in the face of daily stress because I found it difficult to pass the physical fitness requirements.Among the many lessons I learned along the way about how to stay calm is this: it’s important that we understand the obstacles that we face and not run from them. I found a natural ally in the Stoic philosophy. The dictionary describes a stoic like this:  Being Stoic is being calm and almost without any emotion. When you’re Stoic, you don’t show what you’re feeling and you also accept whatever is happening. The noun Stoic is a person who’s not very emotional. The adjective stoic describes any person, action, or thing that seems emotionless and almost blank. This is misleading because Stoics are very aware of their emotions and go to great lengths to understand them. There’s none of that  stiff upper lip  nonsense with them; Mr. Spock was  not  a Stoic. They feel every emotion as acutely as anyone else. They acknowledge, experience, and then domesticate them in order to achieve inner calm. In other words, they keep control of their emotions so they can stay calm in the face of daily stress. They developed  mental toughness  to get through hard times.Stoic philosophy asks us to differentiate between what we can change and what we can’t. We can’t control the weather, stock market, our genetic makeup, or the rudeness of a stranger. We can yell and shout but it won’t make a difference. We can wish and hope but no matter how hard we try, there are many things we can’t change or control.Since we can’t control external events, we need to focus on the things we can control- ourselves and our response to external events. It’s a philosophy that reminds us that the world can be unpredictable; we need to strive to be steadfast and develop a strong mind so we can be in control of ourselves. In other words, we need to grow up, s top feeling sorry for ourselves, and take responsibility for our own actions. The Stoics believed that fulfillment should be based on behavior rather than words, on the things we can control and not those we can’t. They were not idle philosophers who sat on a porch and pontificated; they were people of action who solved their problems on a battlefield, not in a classroom.Leaders like Marcus Aurelius found a stoic attitude prepared them for failure and guarded them against the arrogance of success.I know how hard it can be to maintain a positive attitude when you feel you’re in over your head but here is what I learned from the Stoics about how to stay calm in the face of daily stress:1.  Be mindful of your dayWhen at work, we fantasize about a vacation; on vacation, we worry about the work that’s piled up on our desk. We dwell on intrusive memories from the past and imagine the glory that lies ahead of us. Anywhere but here, our minds pop in and out of the present moment. As a result, our thoughts and emotions control us, something the Stoics warn against.Jon Kabat-Zinn  wrote, “Ordinary thoughts course through our mind like a deafening waterfall. We need to rest in stillness- to stop doing and focus on just being.” Living in the moment is also called mindfulness, and Kabat-Zinn is the biomedical scientist who introduced meditation into mainstream medicine. When we become mindful, we observe our thoughts from moment to moment but we don’t judge them. Mindfulness requires us to be with our thoughts just as they are, neither good nor bad, and not grasp the positive thoughts or shove away the negative ones.Acceptance of a negative emotion doesn’t mean you have to like what produced the negativity. It simply means you accept that certain things are beyond your control. The anger, jealousy, or pain is there whether you like it or not. Just embrace the emotion- sadness, stress, pain, or anger is there whether you like it or not.According to Kabat-Zinn, a cceptance of the present moment has nothing to do with resignation. Acceptance doesn’t tell you what to do; what happens next and what you choose to do comes out of your understanding of this moment.“True fulfillment is to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future, not to amuse ourselves with either hopes or fears but to rest satisfied with what we have, which is sufficient, for he that is so wants nothing. The greatest blessings of mankind are within us and within our reach. A wise man is content with his lot, whatever it may be, without wishing for what he has not.”- SenecaHow To Make It Work For You: Read  â€œFull Castrophe Living” by Jon Kabat-Zinn. He writes about his medically-proven stress reduction program based on mindfulness. It gave rise to a whole new field in medicine and psychology. He illustrates how mind-body approaches derived from meditation and yoga can help us stay calm in the face of daily stress so we can establish greater balance of body and mind.2. Select with careA  recent study  of 5,000 top performers in business yielded a surprise. The study found that the highest-ranked performers were not those who did the most.Nor was a better ability to organize or delegate. Instead, top performers accepted fewer tasks and then obsessed over them. Whenever they could, they carefully selected which priorities, tasks, meetings, customers, ideas or steps to undertake and which to let go.They then applied intense, targeted effort on those few priorities in order to excel. Talent, effort and luck mattered, but not so much.“You are living as if destined to live forever; your own frailty never occurs to you; you don’t notice how much time has already passed, but squander it as though you had a full and overflowing supply - though all the while that very day which you are devoting to somebody or something may be your last.”- SenecaHow To Make It Work For You: Focus is the key when you want to pursue goals with value ra ther than stick with the status-quo. You do not need to work longer hours to outperform; you need to set your priorities and then pour your blood, sweat, and tears into those areas. It’s easier to stay calm in the face of daily stress once you select the important goals in your life that produce value for you.3. Quiet the inner nagDistractions often occur when our inner nag starts to fret about all the things that need to get done. As a result, intrusive thoughts constantly interrupt our productivity, and we end up second-guessing our choices.Research behind the  Zeigarnik Effect  proves that the unconscious mind needs the conscious mind to plan how to finish tasks or accomplish goals. That’s why the inner nag keeps fretting about all that needs to be done. When this happens, it’s impossible to stay calm in the face of daily stress.“Today I escaped from anxiety. Or no, I discarded it, because it was within me, in my own perceptions not outside.”- Marcus AureliusHow To Make It Work For You: Sit down in a quiet place with a pen and paper and let your thoughts ramble. Whether it’s small or large, important or not, write down every single thing that either needs a decision or has your attention. Don’t take the time to prioritize the items on your To-Do list at this point. Just listen to the voice of that inner nag and write down whatever pops up. 4. Identify the stepsFBI firearms training showed me to how to narrow my focus to the one thing that needs attention immediately (front-sight) while at the same time registering awareness of the bigger picture of other things around me (the target). In the same way, your conscious mind may now be focused on a new goal, but the unconscious mind still sees everything else that needs to get done. It needs closure and it will continue to create intrusive thoughts that won’t go away until you’ve turned your attention back to those other tasks that also need to be addressed. In his book,  Getting Things Done, David Allen talks about the importance of identifying Action Steps after you’ve created your To-Do List. The list by itself doesn’t narrow your focus enough when you have lots of priorities clamoring for your attention. You continue to create anxiety for the unconscious mind because it needs more than a goal- it needs a plan! It needs an action step. Prioritize the to-do list you created in Step 3. You’ve addressed all the tasks that your unconscious brain is anxious about, but now you need to prioritize each item according to importance. Beside each item on the prioritized To-Do list, identify the specific next action step to be taken regarding that item. For example, if you need to buy a birthday present, write down “Drive to Nordstrom tomorrow.” The unconscious mind needs specifics like time, place, and opportunity. Once the plan is formed, the unconscious stops nagging with constant reminders. If you have a presentation to make at 8:00 am, your unconscious mind wants to know exactly what needs to be done. You may have 100 other items that also need attention, but you can relax and not worry about the inner nag bothering you again about it if you make a plan to review your notes at 7:00 am that morning. It is human nature to finish what we start, and front-sight focus is how we pay full attention to one goal at a time so we can be successful. Although millennials sometimes get a bad rap in the media - not all of us are on our phones 24/7, thank you very much - no one can deny that we’re somewhat trendsetters when it comes to the food and beverage industry. Since the millennial generation currently has thegreatest buying power   in today’s food and beverage market, it’s no surprise that when millennial foodies make it clear that something is trendy, restaurants and grocers are quick to supply more of it (ever wondered why there are so many different build-your-own salad places?). Food suppliers spend big bucks trying to figure out what will be this year’s trendiest food-related habits and favorite items among millennial consumers. Thanks to them, we were able to uncover the seven millennial foodie trends that you’ll likely see more of in 2019.1. More millennials are dining at homeMenu prices at restaurants across the United States are expected to  steadily increasein 2019. As eating out becomes less affordable and supermarket prices  stay steady, more millennials are opting to eat in. A recent study by  Better Homes Gardensindicated that 93 percent of millennials spend at least four nights a week dining in. Our collective decision to eat in more might be spurred by the booming meal kit market, better-prepared foods at the supermarket and the fact that many of us make Netflix-and-dinner a nightly ritual.2. CBD-infused drinks and foods are becoming more mainstream and popularWhen talking about Cannabidiol  (CBD), we’re referring to a compound derived from hemp that mellows you  without getting you high and that  has been linked  to pain relief in some. As more jurisdictions in North America legalize marijuana in one form or another, more CBD-infused foods and beverages are appearing on restaurant menus across the country. Vermont-based organic eatery  Green Goddess Cafe  is leading the trend with “chill-latte” infused with CBD oil and CBD-enhanced tonic juices. NYC-based bakery  Swee ts by CHLOE  has a CBD-infused chocolate ice cream cake called  Mary Jane  that has CBD frosting and green sprinkles (clever).3. Low-carb diets are here to stayIn 2018, the  ketogenic diet  - one that involves eating a high-fat diet with little-to-no carbs  - became increasingly trendy among millennials. That trend is likely here to stay in 2019. According to a recent  Business Insider survey  that included 1,037 participants, the most popular “dieting choice” among millennials surveyed was a low-carb diet. The Atkins and keto diets are among the most popular low-carb diets out there, but new offshoot diets that are gaining popularity include the ketotarian diet (a plant-based version of keto) and the mild keto diet (one that allows more carbs per day in your diet).4. Millennials are fed up with inhumane farming practices and looking for alternativesIt’s no surprise that sales of plant-based meats grew  over 23 percent  from the start of 2018 to 2019. But this year, millenni als who are looking to eat meat in a more sustainable way might finally be able to try the first ever lab-grown meat product.  JUST, a California company that specializes in plant-based eggs and other products, plans to sell its first ever “slaughter-free” meat this year with its  lab-grown chicken product. The movement is likely to spark controversy, but we’re willing to bet that it’ll be well-received among many millennials who are increasingly turning to plant-based diets.5. Millennials are prioritizing eating for gut healthWe’re becoming increasingly aware that a healthy gut is closely tied to overall wellness - you can’t have one without the other. That’s why more and more millennials are seeking out foods and ingredients that are meant to promote gut health. In 2018, digestive health sales were  expected to exceed  $4.9 billion. According to Whole Foods Market, sales of probiotics-enhanced pantry staples like granola, oatmeal, nut butters, soup and nutrition bar s  will increase  throughout 2019.6. We like food that’s tailored to our specific tastesMore than previous generations, millennials are known for prioritizing individuality over much else. When it comes to our food choices,  customization is key, and a trend that will keep growing steadily well into 2019. We like food that’s tailored to our specific tastes and nutritional concerns. That’s why  build-your-own blank  fast-casual places like Sweetgreen and poke hot spots are trending. Restaurants that offer custom-built meals will keep thriving this year, and more cuisines, like Indian and Korean, will likely jump onto the build-your-own bandwagon.7. We  adore  food mashups and fusionsRamen burgers?  Check. Cronuts?  Check. Millennials love mashups of different foods and cuisines, and the food industry has followed suit in recent years. Restaurants that combine two different cuisines to create a unique menu gained popularity among millennials last year and they’ll likely  keep trending  in 2019. Our favorite food mashups of the past? Oreos baked inside of cookies, nacho lasagna and spaghetti bread.  This post was originally published on Swirled.
